Loan Modification Scams – They Could Cost You More Than Your Home
Loan modification scams are now running rampant! That isn't surprising though, is it? Whenever there is some sort of disaster, financial or otherwise it seems as though all the scum starts to come to the surface. In this case, their marks are “easy targets”, unfortunately. That is mostly true because of their desperation and what is at stake for them.
You see, the underhanded people in the world, can pretty much smell the blood in the water. At this point in time, so many people are in the process of losing their homes. Because of the situations they are in, it is easy for these low life scammers to pull off the loan modification scams.
As with any type of scam, they will say whatever is necessary to get your money out of your pocket and into theirs. Here are a couple of warning signs to look for that could indicate that you could be dealing with someone running a loan modification scam.
-
Lack of details required – Trust me when I tell you that getting a loan modification requires a good amount of information and paperwork. So, if the person you are talking to tells you that it is as easy as you paying them a fee, there is a good chance you are being set up for a loan modification scam. Don't walk, but run away as fast as you can.
-
Upfront fee before consultation – Any reputable loan modification company is going to offer and give you a free consultation. During this consultation they will explain the process to you, and get some detailed information from you that will be required for the modification that you are going to request.
-
Payment in cash or money order only – This is one of the biggest signs that you might be in the middle of a loan modification scam. If they ask for cash or credit card only, the likely reason is so that there isn't a “paper trail” or a way for you to recoup your funds if you are scammed. With payment by check or credit card there is a solid paper trail and usually some sort of recourse that you have if you fall victim to any type of fraud.
While there are plenty of loan modification scams going around, there are also a ton of legitimate organizations ready to help you save your home by arranging a loan modification for you. The key is to be careful in who you choose to work with to save your home.
Due to the existence of scams, many people decide they are going to “go it alone”. The ones that have done so will openly tell you that trying to do it themselves was one of the worst decisions they ever made. The worst part is they will tell you either from a homeless shelter or some sort of temporary housing, because their homes were foreclosed on.
Successfully negotiating with a bank or lending institution isn't something that the average person is cut out to do. Add in the mountains of paperwork and the very specific process that has to be followed, and the average homeowner struggling to save their home is for the most part doomed from the word go.
I guess the point here is this – If you are in jeopardy of losing your home, it is imperative that you work with a professional that knows what they are doing. They understand the process, they know that money is tight so they don't charge you an arm and a leg, and most of all, they legitimately want to see you save your home.
You do however have to be careful not to fall victim to a loan modification scam. So, do your homework, listen to your gut, and take action. That is the most sure fire way that you can ensure that yourself and your family will stay safe and secure in the home you have grown to love.
